Who We Are

Our Mission
Empower BIPOC communities (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to understand their genetic health, make informed healthcare decisions, access essential genetic healthcare services, and connect to culturally relevant care.

Why Color of Genes® Matters

BIPOC communities too often face delayed diagnoses and limited access to genetic healthcare. At Color of Genes, we bridge the gap between awareness and care—creating accessible pathways to culturally relevant, comprehensive genetic healthcare with expert providers and certified genetic counselors who work alongside your healthcare team to guide your care journey. Our name reflects the truth that diverse racial, ethnic, and ancestral backgrounds are woven into our genes. Despite this, research shows that BIPOC patients are significantly less likely to be referred for genetic testing for conditions such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and Huntington’s disease. We’re committed to changing that.

Our Goal

Eliminate health inequities by empowering BIPOC communities to:

  • Learn about genetic health through self-paced, AI-powered, easy-to-use videos in our Learn on Demand hub
  • Explore community events, blogs, and our easy-to-read articles that expand knowledge about BIPOC genetic health
  • Discover easily accessible, culturally relevant Genetic Health Resources curated by Color of Genes®
  • Access genetic testing, screening, and counseling for hereditary disease risk assessments and much more while connecting with local genetic healthcare providers and genetic counselors through our growing Genetic Health Directory
  • Improve patient experiences at doctor visits with our downloadable Color of Genes® Genetic Health Checklist: A Practical Guide for Patients—one of our curated resources

Our Pledge

Promote optimal genetic health in BIPOC communities by strengthening insight, engagement, and connection through trusted products, services, resources, and tools that enable access to culturally relevant genetic healthcare. Together, we can empower BIPOC communities to make informed healthcare decisions, take charge of their health journeys, and build resilient futures.

Why BIPOC Patients?

  • NMF reports that nearly 73% of healthcare workers have witnessed disparities in care for BIPOC patients (highlighting the need for increased awareness and action in healthcare settings).

  • Nature study finds minority-serving physicians are less likely to order or refer patients for genetic testing (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, Huntington’s Disease) than those serving fewer minorities.

  • Penn Medicine survey shows patients give higher satisfaction ratings when treated by doctors of the same race or ethnicity (published in the Daily Pennsylvanian).

  • Cleveland Clinic reports patients often prefer providers of similar race and ethnicity and may request race-specific providers for future visits (“not uncommon”).

  • Michigan Medicine says when doctors and patients share the same race or ethnicity, this improves time spent together, medication adherence, shared decision-making, wait times for treatment, cholesterol screening, patient understanding of cancer risk, and patient perceptions of treatment decisions.

  • WHYY.org reports that traditional English-only speaking genetic counseling creates barriers for non-English speakers, emphasizing the need for culturally and linguistically matched counselors (“someone who understands the language and culture” and “social differences”).

  • YWCA says BIPOC Americans often have worse health outcomes than white counterparts, not always due to poor care but also lack of access to basic healthcare (misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis impacts survival and recovery).

  • Medical News Today highlights that America has the highest maternal mortality rate among wealthy nations, with Black people disproportionately affected (due to healthcare inequities, limited access to quality care, and underrepresentation in research).
