Who We Are

Our Mission
Empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), women, and other underserved communities with knowledge and resources to understand their genetic health, make informed healthcare decisions, access essential genetic services, and connect with equitable and culturally relevant care.

Why Color of Genes® Matters

BIPOC, women, and other underserved communities too often face delayed diagnoses and limited access to genetic healthcare. At Color of Genes®, we provide accessible, equitable, and culturally relevant pathways to genetic testing, complemented by products, tools, resources, and expert guidance every step of the way. Our team of certified genetic counselors and healthcare providers works alongside your healthcare team to support every part of your care journey. Our name celebrates the diversity in human genetics, honoring who we are and where we come from. Yet research shows that BIPOC, women, and other underserved patients are still far less likely to be referred for genetic testing for conditions such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and Huntington’s disease.

We are committed to changing that.

Our Goal

Eliminate health inequities by empowering BIPOC, women, and other underserved communities to:

  • Learn about genetic health through self-paced, AI-powered, easy-to-use educational videos in our Learn on Demand hub
  • Explore events, blogs, and easy-to-read articles from Color of Genes® that enhance genetic health knowledge
  • Discover easily accessible, culturally relevant Genetic Health Resources curated by Color of Genes®
  • Access genetic testing, screening, and counseling for hereditary diseases and more through our Genetic Health Directory
  • Improve experiences at doctor visits with our Color of Genes® Genetic Health Checklist: A Practical Guide for Patients

Our Pledge

Empower BIPOC, women, and other underserved communities with accessible and equitable pathways to genetic health awareness, care, and guidance. Trusted, culturally relevant products, tools, services, and resources support informed healthcare decisions, ownership of health journeys, and the building of resilient, healthier futures.

Why BIPOC, Women, and Other Underserved Communities?

  • NMF reports that nearly 73% of healthcare workers have witnessed disparities in care for BIPOC and underserved patients. Harvard Gazette highlights systemic bias in U.S. healthcare that negatively affects women, and the Guardian shows that women in the US—especially Black women—often must advocate for themselves to receive equitable care, underscoring the urgent need to address healthcare inequities.

  • Nature study finds minority-serving physicians are less likely to order or refer patients for genetic testing (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, Huntington’s Disease) than those serving fewer minorities.

  • Penn Medicine survey shows patients give higher satisfaction ratings when treated by doctors of the same race or ethnicity (published in the Daily Pennsylvanian).

  • Cleveland Clinic reports patients often prefer providers of similar race and ethnicity and may request race-specific providers for future visits (“not uncommon”).

  • Michigan Medicine says when doctors and patients share the same race or ethnicity, this improves time spent together, medication adherence, shared decision-making, wait times for treatment, cholesterol screening, patient understanding of cancer risk, and patient perceptions of treatment decisions.

  • WHYY.org reports that traditional English-only speaking genetic counseling creates barriers for non-English speakers, emphasizing the need for culturally and linguistically matched counselors (“someone who understands the language and culture” and “social differences”).

  • YWCA says BIPOC Americans often have worse health outcomes than white counterparts, not always due to poor care but also lack of access to basic healthcare (misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis impacts survival and recovery).

  • Medical News Today highlights that America has the highest maternal mortality rate among wealthy nations, with Black people disproportionately affected (due to healthcare inequities, limited access to quality care, and underrepresentation in research).
